Spa Tourism in BANKO, BULGARIA
The Balneotourism is a traditional element of the appearance of Bulgaria as a tourist country. The tradition for using the healing qualities of the waters and the natural resources dated back to the Thracians, who, knowing the curative properties of the mineral spas, were famous as skilled healers. These traditions were continued in the Roman Empire and the ‘sacred’ spas of Thrace became known in all corners of the Great Empire.
In the recent years the attitude to prophylaxis and active rest has changed worldwide. The popularity of the European Balne Centers is regenerated because they, together with the traditional methods of treatment, restore the curative therapies from the remote past. Today the fight is for the health of the healthy person. Analyses show that the increasing life expectancy in the economically developed countries gives rise to the significance of balneotourism. The role of adults as consumers of this specific tourists’ product is also increased.
Few countries in Europe could compete with Bulgaria in the great quantities and variety of thermo mineral waters of different physicochemical composition and mud-curing materials. More than 550 deposits with 1600 mineral spas whose capacity amounts to 490l/sec are known and studied. The poor mineralized mineral water is predominant - 66.7%, the mineralized mineral water is 14, 4% and the gas waters – 17, 9%. Our thermo mineral waters are distinguished for their big variety in chemical composition. In addition to the poor mineralized hydro therms our country has valuable sulphide, radon-rich, silicon, chloric-sodium, sourish and fluorine, ferrous and arsenic mineral waters. Particularly valuable are the resources of big reserves of high quality firth curative mud and peat.
The various mountainous reliefs, vast sea coastal strip, the nearness of Mediterranean sea and the favorable geographic position of the country create excellent bioclimatic conditions and unique or rare natural combinations for complex impact on the human body. The advantage of Bulgaria, compared by climate to the traditionally accepted tourist countries developing baneotourism on the Balkans, in Western Europe and Mediterranean is significant. The number of sunny days is more than in Central, North and North-Western Europe by 18-20%. Our mountains are protective barriers for the strong winds from North. The cloudiness in the Black sea coastal areas is 10-30% less than in the Adriatic and some zones of the Mediterranean coastal areas. Rainfalls are less by 26-65% in spring and summer. Bulgaria is protected from the hot winds of African deserts and the hurricane strength of the deep Mediterranean cyclones.
Razlog region ( Razlog, Dobrinishte, Banya)
The town of Razlog is in a valley between three mountains – Rila, Pirin, and Rhodopi. Mountains, 155 km from Sofia and 6 km from Bulgaria’s most developed winter resort, Bansko. Curiously, Bansko is the only town in the region without a single mineral spring.
There are several spa centres such as the spa centres at the Katarino Spa Complex Hotel, comparable to any luxurious spa centre in Europe.
The second village with mineral springs is Banya.
Banya is situated in the heart of three mountains – Pirin, Rila and Rhodopi Moutnains
Only 160 km away from Sofia and 5 km away from Bansko. The healing force of more than 70 mineral hot springs. There are authentic remains of an ancient Roman bath and a Turkish hamam. There are several spa centres such as the spa centre Banya SPA & Wellness Resort.
Dobrinishte is located 6 km south of the popular ski resort Bansko . Dobrinishte is the spa resort in Pirin with 17 mineral springs with temperature of the water between 30 and 43 C. Many of them are popular for their curative effect. The water is known to cure almost every disease - diseases of the nervous system, the skin, the joints, the kidneys, the liver, the gall, etc.
Batzevo is also a village with lot of mineral springs.
